Welcome to the Town of Groton, CT

Groton, CT is a town found inside of New London County, in the state of Connecticut. Educated tourists will notice right away that Groton has a heavy historical background. After all, this is a territory where important battles were once fought, including the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and to some extent, even World War II. Location wise, this city is found on the Thames River. Its location not only makes it a museum-friendly town, but also a highly coastal territory.

What Can We Find in Groton, CT?
Let's get one thing straight: there is a city called Groton, CT and a town of Groton, CT. The town has a much larger population, nearing 40,000 people. The city, on the other hand (and ironically enough) is smaller, holding approximately 10,000 people. The city of Groton is actually a dependent political subdivision of Groton. The real deal here is Groton the town; this has the historical sites, the rich culture, and all the major attractions.

Some of the most interesting attractions in Groton, Connecticut are historically significant. For example, tours are arranged for the Electric Boat Corporation as well as the Groton Submarine Base. Fort Griswold, CT heroes are celebrated at the Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park. There are also museums to speak of, which hold numerous artifacts of early American life, colonial life and even American Indian life from before English settlement.

At the same time, this is not a place that children will be afraid to tread. What child would be bored, considering that there are animal exhibits, interactive science fare, and 3-D movies tailor-made for youths? A lot of this flash is courtesy of the Mystic, Groton area. This village within the town holds the Mystic Aquarium and the Mystic Seaport.

Groton, CT - Then and Now
When it's time to eat, you and the family can head over the seaport area or to the downtown section for a variety of seafood delights, Italian entrees, Chinese and Japanese delicacies and old fashioned American food. You can book a hotel stay in one of Groton's finest hotels, such as the Hampton Inn, Groton Hotel or the Navy Lodge New London Hotel.

The history of Groton is actually quite amazing, considering the hardships it endured from the very beginning (first discovered as an unproductive farmland in the 1600s) and into times of early American wars (both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812), and even down to the present-day recession. Yet, the town is still booming, thanks to major industries like General Dynamics' Electric Boat and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Fishing, tourism and even arts and recreation are also important industries to the town.

Groton, CT is fairly big at 45.2 square feet in total miles, though 13.9 square miles of that total is water. This is truly a coastal city that welcomes a diverse population. Come visit the “Submarine Capital of the World” and take in the many attractions that make New London history come alive to a new generation.
